In a world where most of us are working to become better every day, a setback can bring with it a lot of heartbreak and nasty inner chatter.
It’s easy to think you’ve slipped back into old habits, and that you’re back to square one.
But I’m here to tell you that this is absolutely not the case!
YOU WILL NEVER GO BACK TO WHERE YOU WERE,
Because you can’t unlearn what you now know.
Even if you go back, you’ll be aware you’ve gone back and that makes it all that much better!
Let me explain.
Think back to your starting point, that moment that you decided ‘it’s time for me to make a change!’
What was life like?
What were your views on the world?
And what did you believe to be true about yourself, that you now know isn’t?
If you’re like most of us, when you reflect back to your starting point, it’s really easy to see how much you’ve grown.
But usually, the biggest revelation is awareness.
Back then; you weren’t aware of what you were missing out on. Because you weren’t aware of anything different. But now, you know exactly what it feels like because you’ve been there.
And on the same token, you know what you’re missing which is motivation enough to pick yourself back up and jump back on that horse!
And as well as this, you have the ability within you to pick yourself back up, because you’ve picked yourself up before!
Next time you feel like you’ve taken a backward step, try my four step process…
1. CHECK IN WITH YOUR PROGRESS
As I was saying earlier, take a moment to reflect back. What has changed since your starting point.
Note: this is usually internal stuff!
How do you feel now compared to how you used to?
How do you interact with others?
What has shifted within you?
Extra points if you put pen to paper and write it down!
2. PRACTICE SELF KINDNESS AND GRATITUDE
When you realise how much growth you’ve had, take a moment to be grateful for that. Being kind to yourself when you’re at a low point is the most powerful thing you can do!
Imagine you were your best friend, what would you say to her if she was in this situation?
My guess is you’d remind her how incredible she is, and that she can totally pick herself right back up and carry on!
3. LOOK FOR THE SILVER LINING
Ok so you slipped back, but there is always a loving lesson within that and it’s time to identify it. Maybe you slipped back into old eating habits because you’ve been working too hard? Or maybe you felt anxiety rear it’s ugly head because you’ve been neglecting your meditation practice.
What lesson can you learn from this?
4. SET 3 ACTIONS STEPS
The fastest way out of stuckness is through action! What are three things you can do in the next 48 hours that will get you back on track and moving forward again. Write them down, and carry them out!
You are capable of so much more than you will ever know, and when you can remind yourself that at your low points, you are setting yourself up for a life filled with love, intention and happiness.
Go beautiful, you’ve got this!
