Tell us a little bit about who you are
Who am I? That’s a very good question…. I think for the most part a lot of the time we define ourselves by what we do as opposed to who we truly are and that’s a trap we all often fall into, me included. So whilst I am a mum, that’s not who I am, I am a wife, I am a business owner, an author, a friend, a sister, a daughter, but none of that is truly who I am either….
I think it is important that as human beings we understand we are not what we do or what we have. For the most part as human beings we see our self worth in the things we have or do, but our self worth or who we think we are should never be based on something so transient.
We are simply balls of energy in human form here to be present to life, to live, to laugh, to create, to be grateful and to hopefully make a difference and contribute to the world while we are blessed to be here and that is who I am…
What I do is:
Be a mum and wife, and give love to my family and husband as well as to my extended family, friends and hopefully to all. Through Divine By Therese Kerr my team and I create amazing certified organic, antioxidant and nutrient-rich personal (soon to be hair, baby, men’s and sun) care products. I write, having co-authored one best selling book and currently penning others and I do a lot of public speaking which I love most of all as I get to connect to gorgeous souls and to have the grace of their listening which is such a blessing.
How did you get here? Was there a moment where everything changed?
In 2001/2002, I had tumours in my spleen which resulted in my spleen being removed. This was a turning point in all of our lives (both mine and my family) and one that I am forever grateful for. During this time, I questioned why my body would react in such a way and the knowledge I gained and have continued to gain since this time consistently amazes me. I thought I was healthy, but clearly not as healthy as I thought.
The simple truth is that I wasn't educated as to the amount of chemicals I was unknowingly putting onto my body every day or the amount of additives, preservatives and/or lack of nutrition that was in the food I was consuming. I didn’t know there are around 10,500 chemicals used in personal, skin, hair and beauty care products of which only 13% have ever been tested for safety over the last thirty years, 65-70 per cent of which are absorbed into our skin. I was unaware that our skin absorbs chemicals 10 times faster than the digestive system as it doesn’t have the same lines of defence (digestive enzymes) that the digestive system has available to it to break the chemicals down before they enter our bloodstream.
My children grew up with the usual resistances to food as many kids do. However, through my illness, they, as well as most of my family, learned to cherish their bodies and to understand the importance of treating their bodies with the love and respect needed to remain healthy.
I have been in accountancy all of my life (it seems like a past life as it is now so long ago now where I held Chief Financial Controller and Operations Manager roles), I also have my full Real Estate Licence (deactivated) and now I am living my passion of creating awareness in relation to the chemicals we use everyday on our products and their impacts on our health.
As the CEO of KORA Organics By Miranda Kerr for over three years, I took the company through the certification process and expanded the business throughout Australia, into Japan and opened doors into other countries. There came a point where personally I didn’t want to stop at simply producing certified organic skincare as conventional hair, beauty, baby and personal care products also contain copious amounts of toxic chemicals. Miranda, through the restrictions of her contractual arrangements could not create personal, skin, hair and beauty care products and as a family we decided I would do so under my name and that is how Divine By Therese Kerr came into being.
In addition to creating a certified organic range of personal care products and simply making people aware of what they put on their body, I take a holistic approach to wellness. I personally believe true health is only achieved when all aspects of ourselves are aligned and working, that is, when the mental, physical, spiritual and emotional aspects of ourselves are nurtured and flowing as they should. At Divine we also run retreats designed to empower people to embrace every aspect of themselves. At these retreats (May and October each year) I teach the basic principles of living a healthy, toxic free life. I also lead most of the wellness workshops that have people engaged and fully participating in living a life they love. I also teach meditation techniques and my business partner Sylvi Allan leads the yoga classes and some of the workshops. To find out more about our retreats please phone Sylvi on 1300 416 100 or email email@example.com.
Divine By Therese Kerr is a representation of nurturing the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects in people. Our goal is to have gorgeous souls take the time to nurture themselves through using our products and to tap into the divinity that is, and has always been within them, and to have them experience products from nature as nature intended them to be.
Our Divine motto is:
As I embrace the riches of nature, to cleanse and nurture my body, I restore myself, my divinity, and the service I am to all that is….
What does a regular day looks like for you?
Crazy to say the least, although each day starts off with a 25 minute meditation practice, followed by a quick exercise regime (normally all of this happens before 7:00am each day). I then make a healthy juice or a smoothie for myself and my husband and even when I travel I take my blender with me so that I can continue this practice. It is vitally important that I nurture my body by what I put in and on it and I am committed to ensure my toxic chemical intake in basically non existent when possible so for the most part I only eat certified organic (when possible). That can be a challenge when travelling though, but I manage to get around it most of the time.
When in the office, I am always writing, creating, working on product development, strategizing, marketing and working with our fellow Directors and our team to ensure the message of Divine is being delivered and portrayed as we wish it to be.
I am spending a lot of time traveling currently due to the business being in start up (we released our first product at the end of March 2014) and holding lots of events and I also do a great deal of public speaking on the subject on the toxicity of chemicals and their impacts, providing evidence-based information from the latest research available.
What are your favourite ways to get active?

- Eat healthy
In your eyes what does a Whole Housewife look like?
Comfortable in her own skin and free to be herself
Gives love freely and is non judgmental of herself or of others
Willing to open her heart, grateful for every opportunity and appreciative of all experiences, good and bad
Healthy and real, fit and happy, content and gracious
It’s my dream to …
Have certified organic become the preferred choice for mums all over the world as certified organic is the only guarantee that the products, produce and food doesn’t contain:
TEA.’s, DEA.’s, Sulphates, Parabens, Glycols, Synthetic and Artificial Colours and flavourings, GMO ingredients, phthalates, endocrine disruptors, fragrance, Ethoxylates, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde derivatives, pesticides, insecticides and organophosphates.
There is a huge difference between the use of the word “organic” and “natural” as opposed to certified organic. A company can claim something is “organic” or “natural” currently in Australia if it has one natural ingredient but it may contain 1000’s of chemicals. In fact, the one ingredient called “fragrance” as listed on almost all conventional skin, hair, beauty and personal care products is what we call a “cluster” ingredient and it alone can contain up to 4000 chemicals that never have to be listed on the label as it is classed as “proprietary information”. “Fragrance” is also, according to Dr Carole Hungerford, the number one endocrine disrupting chemical as it contains Phthalates , chemicals that are plasticizing ingredients (which cause longevity of the scent on skin and clothes).
I believe that…
Integrity in business is as important as integrity in your personal life… Without integrity, nothing works. I also believe that we are here on this planet to be something much greater than the sum total of ourselves. We are all here to contribute, to put back, to make a difference in some way and we all have the opportunity to do that, in fact my favourite saying is:
”I always wondered why somebody didn’t do that…. And then I realised I AM SOMEBODY.”
Today I’m grateful for…
- My family
- My health
- For nature and all it’s beauty and offerings.
- For the fact that I have clear running water at my fingertips, that I have a bed to sleep in that will keep me warm, that I have eyes to see, ears to hear, the ability of touch, smell, speak and an open heart that allows me to be grateful and to love.
- I am grateful for the country I live in, for the fresh air that I get to breath everyday, for my dog and for the unlimited opportunity that presents itself daily with my businesses, public speaking engagements, and for my life as it is and every experience I have had to date as I would not be who I am but for those experiences. I am grateful that I get to play a big game in this life, that I am not ruled by fear and instead embrace opportunity and possibility that allows me to live my dream, to live a life of making a difference in some way to myself, my family and to others.
For a better tomorrow we must …
Educate ourselves on the damaging impact of chemicals that are found in our everyday conventional products. We must understand that whatever we do to our environment and to our animals we ultimately do to ourselves as we are all connected. For a better tomorrow we must embrace ourselves, each other and all living things. We need to see each individual and each living thing as a divine gift and embrace a higher consciousness where we acknowledge ego has driven society for so long and that has not served us. We need to let go of fear based action, speak from the heart not from the head and become the awareness behind our thoughts so that we truly see what is possible for our future and for future generations
What is your favourite meal of the day?
My breakfast because our elimination cycle commences around 4:00am each morning and goes through to midday. During this time I recommend not eating anything heavy as when you put something heavy in your belly (big farm breakfast) you take your body out of elimination mode (where you burn fat and eliminate what needs to be eliminated) and put it into digestive mode. Most of our energy is taken up on digestive processes so give your body the opportunity to do what it needs to do and only have something light and easily digestible for breakfast (normally I eat a smoothie at around 11:00/11:30am each morning). Before that I mainly drink filtered water.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
'Let your little light shine', and Marianne Williamson’s famous speech “Fear” that she wrote for Nelson Mandela:
Our Greatest Fear —Marianne Williamson
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others
Creamy Pumpkin Soup
With Coconut Milk and Cinnamon
Chef Kate, “this is a creamy and delicious soup is filled with healthy ingredients that your whole family will enjoy. It’s a special recipe designed to honour Miranda Kerr’s grandfather, Peter “Pa” Kerr, who grows the most amazing pumpkins up in Gunnedah, NSW.”
Pumpkin is rich in antioxidants, which is why many have added it to their anti-ageing regimen.
SERVES 4 – 6
MAKES 5 cups
PREP TIME 30 – 45 minutes
Water (to boil the squash and sweet potato)
3 cups cooked pumpkin (squash) (4 cups raw)
1 cup cooked medium sweet potato (peel and cut into 1 inch cubes, 1¼ cups raw)
1½ cups vegetable stock
1 cup coconut milk (or non-dairy milk, almond milk works well)
1 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp nutmeg (optional)
1/8 tsp ground cloves (optional)
3 tsp agave or honey (more or less to taste)
4 – 6 thyme sprigs or parsley leaves (for garnish, optional)
Fill a large saucepan with water and add the pieces of pumpkin and sweet potato. Cover and bring to the boil and cook for 10 – 15 minutes, or until tender. Drain and set aside to cool prior to blending (approx. 10minutes).
Combine the pumpkin and sweet potato together with remainder of ingredients in a food processor fitted with the chopping blade or a hand blender (you may need to process the soup mixture in 2 batches depending on the size of your machine).
NOTE This soup can also be made in a blender. Again, depending on the size of the blender, you may need to blend in 2 batches. You may need to add a little more milk or stock while blending.
The soup is now ready to gently reheat and serve or it can be refrigerated to reheat later. Reheat in a saucepan over medium heat, and stir until heated thoroughly. Do not allow to boil. Garnish with a sprig of fresh thyme sprigs and enjoy.
The soup will keep for 3 days refrigerated or freeze for up to 1 month.
